I had the opportunity in January to go back to my Lebanese heritage, visit our amazing winemakers we represent in New Orleans, and of course, taste some fantastic wines!

Bizou Wines supplied more than 30 wines at the annual Amazing Grapes benefit for the Hermann-Grima House, while Founder & Owner, James Moises, poured. Reds, whites, roses and champagnes to fit any taste were paired well with the cuisine prepared by Broussard's, the neighbor of Hermann-Grima House. Both of their adjacent courtyards were open for the party on April 23.

The Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses museums are committed to preservation, interpretation and education; they strive to tell the story of why we live in New Orleans, and why we rebuilt our beloved city.
A beautiful, tasty and fun way to support their works is their annual “Amazing Grapes Wine Auction” on April 23. This festive fundraising evening features auctions featuring rare and hard to find wines, luxurious vacations and fabulous art.

New Orleans native James Moises is a physician and professor of emergency medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. In 2002, he began making wine in Oregon's Willamette Valley with his medical school classmate Mark Wahle, whose family has vineyards in that region. The first vintage was released in 2009. Today, Moises Vineyard & Wines (www.moiseswines.com) is a small boutique winery, producing about 400 cases a year. Most of it is pinot noir, and practically all of it is sold at shops and restaurants in the New Orleans area. Later this summer, the winery will release its latest vintages, including a new pinot gris.

James Moises released the first vintage of his Oregon pinot noir in 2006. Since then the local ER doctor has tasted his own wines many times, but he's never tried them all together. On Wednesday, September 5, James Moises will get that chance. St. James Cheese Company will hold a vertical tasting of the 2006 through 2010 vintages of Moises'Oregon pinot noir.
Produced by local physician James Moises, this well-crafted wine from Pommard Clone grapes channels Burgundian Pinot Noir and Oregon terroir. It exudes aromas of red and black cherries, herbal and spice notes and earthiness. On the palate, taste plum and cassis. Drink it with salmon, tuna, roast fowl, lamb chops, roasted vegetables and mushrooms.

Dr. James Moises leads the kind of double life that would challenge even the most ardent overachievers. Besides directing the emergency room at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center and teaching at Tulane and LSU's medical schools, Moises makes wine. This isn't some sort of backyard operation — he is a wine producer in Oregon's Willamette Valley, and it's a full-time, year-round occupation. Somehow, Moises manages to fit both his medical and wine-making careers into one schedule. He sees wine making as a complement to his duties as a physician and uses both occupations to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Growing up in a close-knit family of six children, Dr. James Moises was introduced to festive family gatherings and social soirees at an early age. “My parents loved to entertain. They hosted dinner parties and gatherings regularly, so there were always lots of fabulous food and wine around. It’s a Lebanese thing … friends and family have always been a priority. Looking back, I guess that is where my interest in wine began.
